Have an Eyeshadow Palette with No Light Shades?

What to do when your eyeshadow palette doesn’t have a light shade

Sometimes you have a great Eyeshadow Palette but it just doesn’t have a nice soft light shade to round it out. Here’s what I do when I have one of those palettes.

I wanted to share a little tip with you today regarding eye shadow palettes. Sometimes you might come across a palette that lacks soft or light shades. One of the great things about getting whole palettes of eye shadows, like our Glimmer Eyeshadow Quads, is that they are specifically curated and coordinated to go together.

Traditionally, a quad palette would include a soft light shade, a couple of medium shades, and a dark shade. However, many newer palettes focus on medium and dark shades. For example, our Mistress quad or Enchanted Eyes Cashmere palette mainly consist of darker or bright vivid shades. But even when using these palettes, you may still want to incorporate a lighter shade to brighten up the eye area and have better control over where you apply the darker shades for depth and dimension.

Here’s what I do when using one of these eye shadow quads: If I want to use shades like Darling or Temptress, I take either a Glimmershadow or one of the CathyCat Shadow Gaze shades. The glimmer shadows have a shimmer effect, while the CathyCat Shadow Gaze shades are more matte. For example, I use the shade Sunstone, which is a matte sateen, or the Pink Sapphire Glimmershadow, which has a soft shimmer. The Shadow Gaze shade I use is called Buff, and it’s a light neutral shade.

To start, I apply one of these soft, light neutral shades as the base for my eye makeup. Today, I’m using the Pink Sapphire Glimmershadow. I apply it by sweeping it over the entire eye area, from the corners to the edge and up to the brow. This creates a nice, soft, even light base to work with. Then, I can go in with my eye shadow quad or larger palette that has medium to dark shades and play with where I want to apply the colors.

For my look today, I’m keeping it simple and using only one additional color from the Mistress quad. I’m using a plummy burgundy shade, and since I forgot my eye shadow brush, I’m using the sponge tip applicator that comes with the palette. I apply the burgundy shade in the crease and the outer corner to add a little lift to my eyes. The glimmer shadow intensifies the color and makes it go on even smoother, almost like a primer for the eye shadow powder.

This gives me a nice defined look. If I wanted to have a bit of fun and add some color, let’s say I’m wearing a blue top, I can take the blue shade from the palette, which actually appears more purple when applied. Using the pointed end of the applicator, I drag the shade along my lash line to define it. It’s worth noting that this shade is one of the very few shades we have that looks different on the eye than it does in the palette. While I generally prefer brushes over sponge tip applicators, these applicators can still be quite useful, so don’t let a lack of brushes hold you back.

I apply a small amount of the blue shade along the lower lash line, but I don’t go all the way across because I want to keep the eye area looking fuller. That’s my little tip for when you have palettes that mostly contain medium to dark shades but need a light shade to complement them. Just grab one of the Glimmershadows in a lighter shade or the Shadow Gaze matte stick in a lighter shade.
