How to choose what to use

For a Day at the Beach, the Pool or the Playground

Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Lotion with SPF 30

Benefits:

To Use:

• Apply liberally and evenly over exposed skin
• Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age
• For continued protection, reapply about every two hours or sooner if effectiveness diminishes; not to exceed nine applications per day for sunscreen protection
• Reapply after 80 minutes in the water or after excessive perspiration or prolonged activity

The website InsectCop did a very thorough review of the Bug Guard Plus Lotion and found it to be “one of the best insect repellent lotions out there”

For Hiking and Camping for extended periods of time

BENEFITS 
• Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile virus for 8 hours
• Provides effective protection against deer ticks, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies, and biting midges
• Provides SPF 28 or SPF 30 protection
• Does not need to be washed off when returning from the outdoors
• DEET-free
• Dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic

Available in Pump Spray or Aerosol Spray. My family likes the Aerosol Spray because it’s easy to apply at any angle, and it’s unscented. Both repel mosquitoes for 8 hours and deer ticks for 12 hours.

TO USE 
• Apply evenly before sun and insect exposure. An adult must apply this product to children under 10. 
• Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age
• For continued protection from mosquitoes, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges, reapply after 8 hours
• For continued protection from deer ticks, reapply after 6 hours and from black flies, reapply after 3 hours 
• For sunscreen protection, reapply as needed or after towel drying, swimming or sweating
• Do not exceed 4 applications per day

Available in Pump Spray, Aerosol Spray or Towelettes. My family likes the towelettes because they are handy to stash in tote bags and glove boxes for those unexpected outings that require an insect repellent. They’re also great for travel since there are no liquids that can leak, or aerosol cans that can’t be taken on flights.

TO USE 
• Hold container 6 to 8 inches from skin and spray with a slow sweeping motion, liberally and evenly. Do not spray in enclosed areas. Do not apply under clothing, on cuts, wounds, freshly shaved, excessively sunburned, or irritated skin
• Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age
• For protection from gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges, reapply after 6 hours. For mosquitoes reapply after 8 hours
• For black flies reapply after 3 hours 
• Do not exceed 2 applications per day

What about Skin So Soft Bath Oil?

“While we know that many consumers have turned to Skin So Soft Bath Oil, the product is actually not intended to repel mosquitoes or sold for that purpose, and is not approved by the EPA as a repellent,” Avon told Consumer Reports. Jun 27, 2017
